In 1979, Ecology Action’s Cliff Humphrey created this fascinating document: an instruction manual for “Recycle: The Resource Conservation Game.” The game was to be played with the materials of an old Monopoly board game.

Ingeniously, the game furthered the spirit of recycling on two levels: (1) the players were recycling and re-purposing their older Monopoly game set; and (2) within the game, the players modeled the good work of recycling by focusing not on profits (as Monopoly had encouraged people to do) but on the amount of glass, newspaper, and cans they managed to recycle!
