It Ain’t Me, Babe was the US’s first national feminist newspaper, founded in 1970 in Berkeley. Edited by a number of students and recent grads, and run out of the basement of an apartment near campus, It Ain’t Me Babe published articles on a variety of feminist issues and achieved a wide readership–including one trans woman who wrote into the paper. The following article, published in December of 1970, consists of the letter, signed as “Beth,” and the response of the editors of It Ain’t Me, Babe. Unfortunately, like many radical feminists of the time (and people in general), the editors of It Ain’t Me, Babe were only willing to extend their support of women to cis women, viewing trans identities as merely a deceptive way to opt out of male privilege.
