The University officials saw the twLF strike as an uprising and turned to law enforcement to quell it. Police used several tactics to break the strike on Sproul. The first was to use extreme violence on strikers, often incapacitating them so they could no longer participate in the strike. A second way was to make public arrests. Several strikers were arrested and sometimes kept in jail for days at a time. The fight to transform their educational system was not without sacrifice.
