Priscilla Fansler Shenk, a concerned UC Berkeley mom, gave her thoughts in regards to the twLF strike. She began by addressing how the increase in violence at Berkeley had taken a toll on her son’s morale. Shenk then reaffirmed what UC President Gilman had said in his 1871 inaugural address—that the University of California must adapt to its people.
Notably, Shenk was a graduate of the University of the Philippines, an institution which she regarded as a forerunner of the Third World College that students were demanding at Berkeley and at University of Michigan. She attested to the importance of having Third World Studies and supported twLF “wholeheartedly”.
