In this circulated memo, Mary Ann Pollar appealed to her reader to join the Rainbow Sign on the occasion of its first anniversary.
Even in the form of a memo, Pollar wrote evocatively of the promise of the club she worked so hard to launch. The Rainbow Sign, she suggested, had three intertwined goals: “to showcase the very best there is of our culture and heritage”; to “set a Black table at which everyone is welcome to eat”; and to create “an alternative to the usual rat-race that our present society requires.”
