This passage is from a book written in 2015, by Corbett O’Toole. Corbett O’toole herself is a disability rights activist. Ms. O’Toole contracted Polio as a child and she is a paraplegic who uses a walker to get around. She lived in Berkeley at one point in her life and was very active in making the City disability accessible. In her book, she gives a first-hand account of the 504 sit ins, which effectively forced the government to implement section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. After the 504 sit in any organization that received government funding were not allowed to discriminate based on a person’s disability. The 504 sit-in eventually led to the passage of the ADA in 1990, the ADA is a legislation that outlaws discrimination against a disabled person in all areas of life, including employment.
