Rainbow Sign’s month-long first anniversary celebration brought in vibraharpist Bobby Hutcherson, a California native of international acclaim. He had recently won Downbeat Magazine’s International Critics Poll for best jazz vibraharpist and had recorded and released “Natural Illusions” on Blue Note, earlier that year.
Hutcherson was doubtless a friend of Rainbow Sign, as he played there multiple times over the life of the club.
Presumably, by having both an early and late show, a dinner and non-dinner option, as well as a member and non-member price, Rainbow Sign could reach a wider audience, garner greater profits, and offer their artists more exposure.
