On May 19th1975, the first director of PDSP, John Hessler, wrote a letter to the Cal administration. In this letter he admitted that without the support and cooperation of UC Berkeley, PDSP could not have survived, or succeeded. In the letter, John Hessler states that the university’s support was at firs “more verbal than monetary.” After 1972 the University increased its support from $20,000 a year, to $26,000 in 1973, and subsequently to $36,000. This letter points to the fact that even though PDSP was first funded by the Department of Education, UC Berkeley campus itself was instrumental in supporting a program for disabled students, and funding the PDSP in the later years.
