Best known as an alto saxophonist, John Handy also plays tenor and baritone sax, clarinet, oboe and sings. He played with Charles Mingus in the 1950s and early 1960s then in the late 1960s and 1970s led a quintet featuring Michael White on violin, Jerry Hahn on guitar, Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums. Presumably this quintet made up five sixths of the sextet that performed at Rainbow sign in June of 1972.
