As the school for the Deaf accepts the fate of the move, and left to their new site in Fremont, California following the ’79-’80 academic year, the school for the Blind continued the relentless fight to stay.
The largest concern for the Blind is the independent mobility and training that takes years to perfect and memorize for many teachers and students to be able to confidently walk or ride AC transit around town.
The move to Fremont boasts big concerns over suburban sprawl, lack of sidewalks, public transportation, and a town dependent on cars. As California has only two Deaf and Blind institutions in California, many parents send their Blind children to live on campus from their homes in the most Northern California communities to the Central Valley. Many families fear the rural constraints of Fremont will hinder the ability of their children to live and learn independently.
