The Co-Op Recycling Center was formed by people who were associated with Ecology Action but did not move to Modesto with the commune. According to an interview with Kathy Evans, they opened a recycling center in 1972 at the corner of Sacramento St and University Ave, quickly becoming the recycling hot spot in Berkeley. The center formed a relationship with the Ecology Center, who moved their office across the street.
The visual organization of the poster is fascinating between its horizontal and vertical text. We continue to see hand produced distributional material that reflects counter culture creativity through the “RECYCLE” calligraphy and drawings of recyclables.
This document was on the backside of the following Ecology Action publication after they had moved and members were using a PO Box number instead of the Benvenue address, linking the Co-Op to Ecology Action.
