This handwritten flier from Ecology Action suggests how the ecology movement in Berkeley was tied to the countercuisine movement.
Drawing upon the back-to-nature message of writers such as Euell Gibbons, who exhorted folks to eat particular weeds instead of killing them or viewing them as nuisances (Gibbons is namechecked at the end of the document), this flier advocates that people appreciate the nutritional value of the weeds that sprout unchecked in the city, especially during the “winterspringtime” transition.
Kathy Simpson, the author of the flier, expands on the healthful properties of chickweed, mallow and other “weeds,” and suggests that they can be just as nutritious as domesticated greens.
