East Bay Gay, soon to be renamed the Pacific Center for Human Growth in 1974, started as a simple yet crucial switchboard that very quickly expanded into a vast array of services for the Gay residents of the East Bay. The focus never strayed far though from their primary goal of providing a resource center with a focus on mental health care. Bishop’s Coffeehouse in Oakland where the therapy sessions took place was the second location for the organization before moving into their first official facility at 2329 San Pablo Ave in Berkeley. In this newspaper article written by one of the founding members, Richard Boxer, and quoting another founder, Jim Green, we can extrapolate the very personal nature by which the organization was developed to serve their Gay brethren.
