According to a report by the chancellor’s advisory board, in 1982 the name PDSP was changed to DSP because many people “felt that the name was not inclusive of all students served.” During the 1970s, many students with non-physical disabilities had attended UC Berkeley, and required services from the PDSP. This presented PDSP with a new challenge; many members of the campus community did not believe that the non-orthopedic disabled required accommodations because they did not look ‘severely handicapped’. This issue prompted the university administration to release a report in 1977, informing the campus community that there must be compliance with the 504 legislation, and that per the legislation discrimination due to a student’s physical or non-orthopedic handicap is banned.
