In 1988, the Pacific Center had to close down the AIDS project due to lack of funding, and AIDS support came under control of the county. However, eight months later, the project had garnered enough community support to reopen, and became independent of the center, operating as its own body. This allowed the center to return to focusing on its many other community resource projects, which had suffered for funding with money being directed towards the AIDS project.
