Four activists discussed, in the pages of Big Mama Rag, the difficulty of divides experienced within the Lesbians of Color Conference in Malibu — such as those stemming from the ideologies of Lesbian Separatism and Cultural Nationalism. The 1980s saw a shift in which it was beginning to be acknowledged and addressed that there were overlapping levels of oppression that individuals were experiencing based on race, class, gender, and sexuality. To address this issue, it was necessary to troubleshoot ways to develop solidarity among these various factions within the community while maintaining a respectful understanding of the unique experiences of everyone involved.
