In this photo, the relationship between photographer and subject is complicated in that two men are taking pictures of a girl while she herself also has a camera. In this way, the question of agency in this situation is unclear, as we don’t know who is literally “calling the shots.” This is emblematic of the larger conditions in which girls of the street lived. Although they did have an increased sense of autonomy because they were living on their own, this put them in a vulnerable position and others took advantage of them.
