The Berkeley teachers’ walkout at the start of the 1975-76 school year was part of a wave of such walkouts, which affected between a million and two million students.
The teachers’ strikes were triggered by budgetary shortfalls in municipal governments, as well as by a strong sense, among public school teachers, that they needed to stand up against cutbacks to education.
