In an age of “Black Power,” “Brown Power” and “Red Power,” it’s not surprising that the children of Telegraph Avenue also aspired to have (as the small sticker in the photograph suggests) “Kid Power”.

Kathy Delacour belonged to the Red Rockets, a group of older teenagers on the Avenue whom Rachel Krech Marinos remembers as “the cool kids.” Rachel herself, too young to be a Red Rocket, belonged to the Mini Mobsters, a similar group of younger children. To Rachel, these groups served the same function of cliques in a normal high school, as they were the main source social structure for the street kids of Telegraph Avenue.
