Rachel Krech’s nanny Kathy often took her to People’s Park to pass the time during the day while her parents were at work. Rachel says that next to Cafe Mediterraneum, People’s Park was the most important spot for the community to “hang out.” Though it was a park, it was used by adults as much as children.

Kathy’s father, Michael Delacour, had a large hand in the establishment of People’s Park. He lead the successful activist efforts to assume control of the university-owned land in order to establish a community space. Though Michael also lived in Berkeley, Kathy lived with the Kreches on Russell Street.
