These paired images evoke Nina Simone’s remarkable ability to convey the range of human emotion as a pianist and vocalist. A stormy, often intimidating presence by many accounts, Simone could nonetheless perform material from showtime ballads to gospel-jazz epics, shifting with ease from a gravelly whisper to a long honeyed note in the span of seconds.
