The Krech family’s social appeal extended beyond their fellow residents of the Avenue. When director Mike Nichols shot scenes for The Graduate on location in Berkeley in the mid-1960s, he ran into the Kreches and decided that they should be in the film. In this still, the Kreches are seen leaving the jewelry store where Dustin Hoffman’s character buys an engagement ring for his love interest. According to Rachel, her parents were supposed to represent a prototypical, hip, young Berkeley couple who subvert social conventions through having a child before getting married, as indicated by the fact that they are leaving the engagement ring store with a baby in tow.
