The Oakland Post announces the fifth annual Malcolm X celebration, hosted by Berkeley High’s Black Studies program and the city of Berkeley’s Young Adult Project.

The celebration would “include song and dance, dramatic skits, poetry movies, booths for display of arts and crafts, foods, hair braiding and distribution of literature.” It offered one example among many of how the narrative surrounding the test gap failed to take into account the different forms of intellectual and cultural development that programs such as Black Studies actively promoted.
