Lou Sullivan, here referred to as Sheila which was his assigned at birth name, expressed feeling alone as an AFAB trans person until they learned about Steve Dain through articles in the Oakland Tribune and SF Chronicle. Steve comes up a number of time in Lou’s journals, and the two eventually were connected much after this letter by Lin Fraser, a trans therapist who worked with the Pacific Center and Golden Gate Girls/Guys. Lou saved just about every article referencing Dain, and later received counseling from him as he went through transition. Steve encourages Lou to seek counseling, possibly one of the most important services available for trans people, which he does.
