Building off the original proposal for a Black Studies program, this proposal for an Afro-American Studies department laid out “a four year, interdisciplinary program with the traditional academic purpose of developing a body of knowledge and methodology appropriate to that knowledge.”

Ideally, it was hoped that the department would find a home in a separate College of Ethnic Studies. However, in 1974 the department was approved in the College of Letters and Science.
